For the One Week 16 The Rich Ruler by Crossing Barriers Ministry

Today’s questions: Are you sure you are going to heaven? What are you doing that guarantees that trip to eternal life?

Mark 10:17-22

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, one thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

We are back after our Thanksgiving break. We will have another episode from the series next week, then we will have our Christmas event. We will return on January 9, 2022.

We return to our series titled “For the One”. As we continue this series, may we be reminded that it’s based on the book by Dr. Danny Forshee with the same title. We have been studying characters of the bible and how they were equipped to evangelized. Hopefully we can take these ideas and utilize them today as we follow the direction of the Great Commission.

We started with Jesus being the teacher, preacher, and molder of man. We looked at John the Baptist, the Paralytic, and the Samaritan Woman. We examined the Apostle Peter, the Apostle John, Apostle Phillip, Nathaniel, and Matthew. We studied the Centurion and the Syro-Phoenician Woman. We followed that up with The Woman in John 8 and before thanksgiving, we studied the man with the withered hand.

We are entering the part of the Book of Mark where a rich ruler approaches Jesus with questions about eternal life. Jesus indicates that earthly possessions are a significant barrier to entering God’s Kingdom.

Luke 12:48

But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

The main question being asked was what must I do to earn eternal life? Of course, we are referring to life in God’s Kingdom. We must know that some Jews back in Jesus’s day denied the possibility of resurrection and eternal life while many others believed that that they would be resurrected and granted entrance into the Kingdom of God.

Daniel 12:2

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Daniel is expounding on Isaiah’s framework for resurrection. This fits with the reconciliation and restoration promised to Israel through the Servant figure in Isaiah 52.

Jesus replies that “You know the commandments”?

Exodus 20:12-17

Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.

Then He says to go sell all that you own. This is the ultimate test for any rich man. This is what the man needed to hear but most likely did not want to hear. Earlier in the book of Mark, while Jesus was dealing with young children, told the crowd that whoever wanted to go to heaven must be like a little child. A child trusts.

A British Evangelist G Campbell Morgan described the rich young ruler as:

Discernable

The young man was able to be perceptible. He approached Jesus and recognized Him as a good teacher.

Courageous

While other Jesus leaders avoided or rejected Jesus, he approached Him and spoke with Him.

Humble

He knelt before Jesus. A definite show of respect.

Honest or Religious

He tried to keep the commandments. Like us today, we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God, but we need to try.

Unfulfilled

By asking Jesus what I shall do to inherit eternal life, it shows that we can’t do it on our own and we need His help. We always need His help.

As we head into the closing of today’s message, we need to remember a few things.

Not Everyone will be Saved

You share the gospel with someone, but it might not be you that brings them to Jesus. In some cases, they may not be saved whatsoever. In this case, this rich young man walked away because he enjoyed pleasure and things of this world more.

Speak the Truth in Love

As much as it may hurt and the person may not want to hear about it, we must speak the truth in love. This man didn’t want to hear that he would need to go sell all his belongings, but he needed to be told.

Ephesians 4:15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Imagine you went to ask your friend about a life choice you want to make. How would you feel if you found out that your friend did not speak the truth in love because the friend thought you wouldn’t want to hear it.

With God All Things Are Possible

Mark 10:27

And Jesus looking upon them saith, with men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Not much more needs to be said, that pretty much sums up the whole message.

Philippians 2:5

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
