He was laid to rest in a tomb with a boulder rolled in front of the tomb to seal the body in. The women came very early the first day of the week with spices they had prepared.  However, they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. When they entered the tomb, the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. There were two men stood by in shining garments.  They queried why they search for the living among the dead.  They then remind them that Jesus told them that for prophesy to be fulfilled, He needed to deliver into the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day He would rise again.          (Vs. 1-12)

Two of them left the others and headed towards a village called Emmaus. The village is just under seven miles from Jerusalem. At some point Jesus approached them but their eyes were in a biblical state so that they would not know him.  (VS. 13-16)

Jesus starts talking to the two whom one of them happened to be Cleopas. Cleopas responds to Jesus’s question of what they were talking about by saying that He was a stranger in the area and therefore doesn’t know what has happened in the past while. Jesus continued the conversation by asking what things had happened. Cleopas went on to tell him all about Jesus who went to Jerusalem to be handed over to the sinners, be crucified, nailed to the cross, died, and place in a tomb.  He finished his story of the ladies going to the tomb, finding it empty, and angels appeared saying Jesus was alive. The stranger responded, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!” Cleopas looked over at the stranger confused. Then the man looked right into Cleopas’s eyes and said, “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Vs. 17-27)

They were coming to the outskirts of the village when the stranger made it apparent that He was continuing, but they urged Him to come stay with them as evening was coming upon them. He agreed.  He sat down to dinner, took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and shared with them.  It was at this point their eyes were opened and they knew him. (Vs.28-31)

After the above, Jesus disappeared out of sight. Off to Jerusalem they went and found the eleven gathered together.  They told the others all of what had transpired. (Vs. 32-35)

While they were gathered together, talking among themselves, Jesus stood amid them. Then He says, “Peace be unto you” The group was terrified and thought they seen a ghost or spirit.  Jesus them asked why are they troubled and why do these thoughts rise in your hearts?  (Vs. 36-38)

At this time, Jesus showed them who He was by showing them His hands and feet. He them asked for a piece of meat and He ate before them.  He then told them that the words that He spoke with them when they were together that all things must be fulfilled as written by Moses in the scriptures.  It is written that Christ must suffer and rise again on the third day. This was all so that sins were paid for. He told them that they were a witness to all these things.  He told them that He would send the power of His father upon them.  (Vs. 39-49)
