The Singing Commandment by Crossing Barriers Ministry

The Picture by Kidd Frock & Sheryl Crow

How many of you have never heard the song?

How many of you feel there is nothing wrong with this song?

Those of you that have never heard this song might need to get out occasionally and live it up. Those of you feel there is nothing wrong with this song might want to dedicate some more time to the bible study. Today however we are going to touch on a topic called The Singing Commandments.

A simple thought here might be that some music is a strong suggestion that may not necessarily be the biblical way. Now I am not against music by any means.  I grew up to country and like the oldies and DJayed occasionally over the past decade or so.

Songs may suggest it could be implied that drugs and alcohol being more important than anything else; covetousness; adultery; thieving; or even murder.

The problem as I see it fits us into one of the following categories:

  1. We don’t know any of the commandments;
  2. We don’t know all the commandments and don’t want to or care;
  3. We know the commandments and don’t care when we break one of them;

This brings us to our scripture for today: Exodus 20:1-17

The term “Ten Commandments” generally applies to the list mentioned in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5.

According to the scriptures, the book of Exodus says it happened on Mount Sinai although the book of Deuteronomy says that it was Mount Horeb. According to scholars they are basically the same place and they mean “Mountain of God” Deuteronomy 9:10

Of all the biblical laws and commandments, the Ten Commandments alone are said to have been “written with the finger of God” as pointed out in Exodus 31:18 above. The stone tablets were placed in the Ark of the Covenant: Exodus 25:21 Deuteronomy 10:5

Some scholars propose a date between the 16th and 13th centuries b.c. because Exodus and Deuteronomy connect the Ten Commandments with Moses and the Sinai Covenant between Yahweh and Israel.

There was a time that a national publication did a poll to see how many people knew the commandments. The results showed that 49 % of protestants and 44% of Catholics knew all the commandments.

Some philosophers have stated that life would be chaos without them. Others say that God’s commandments are the foundation for the laws we have today. Others say that God gave them to us, so we could live good, peaceful, happy productive lives.

God provided the rules to his people referring to those that He brought out of Egypt. God wanted them to have these rules for their well being and nowhere in this passage of the commandments does it guarantee anyone their redemption. Nowhere in the bible does it say we can earn eternal life by keeping the law.

We do the same for our children as they get old enough to understand. I think the very first one we teach them is to obey your parents or well there will be consequences. Then comes the lying or the stealing. Somewhere, hopefully, a parent or a pastor is teaching them the commandments.

God also gave us law to remind us that we are sinners. Did he expect the Israelites or us to obey the law? The answer is no and that is why God created a forgiveness structure. James 1:23

So, the following is the solution to the problem.

We need to believe there is only one God;                                                                                Once we believe there is only one God, then we must do away with anything else that we may worship;                                                                                                                                           We shall watch our tongue, think before we speak, and never use God’s name unless its in a biblical way;                                                                                                                                     Sunday is our sabbath day for most. We need to come to church and worship and praise our Father. This is the day where we also rest as Monday generally starts a new week for most;                                                                                                                                                       We all must honor thy mother and father; children you heard that, adults that means you as well. But we must also obey our Father and to do that we need to know the commandments to obey Him;                                                                                                              No matter how dire the circumstances, we must not kill, threaten to kill or for that matter joke about killing someone; Be careful around guns, knives and extra careful around machinery and moving vehicles motorized or not;                                                    Plain and simple, no matter the urge if you not married then you better have a cold shower or two;                                                                                                                                        If it doesn’t belong to you then no matter of justification will work, it is still stealing. Think of this, when you don’t tithe properly you are stealing from God.                             No matter the reason, don’t lie. Not only lying against your neighbor wrong but could cause the neighbor a whole lot of trouble that otherwise would not have been there;          We really should only have what we need which by a lot of definitions could take us back to the Little House on the Prairie days. Wanting something that your neighbor has is just plain wrong.                                                                                                                                If you haven’t become a believer, you need to do this as well.                                             Read your bible, pray and worship your Father every day.

These dozen steps will make you a strong believer, but you will still be a sinner.  However, you have a better chance of eternal life if you honestly do your best.

So, do you still believe there is nothing wrong with these songs?
