Garden Betrayal: Intro to the Bible by Crossing Barriers Ministry

Do you remember what Jesus told Peter in the last story? He told him that Satan was going sift him like wheat, but he had prayed for him. Peter said, even if all fall away because of you, I never will. (Matthew 26:33). After the supper, they walked across the valley to the Garden of Gethsemane where He often prayed with His disciples.Today’s message come from Matthew 26:36-56

Today’s lesson starts off in a place called Gethsemane where Jesus went with His disciples. He has told the His disciple to sit while He went over a way to pray. (Vs. 36)

Then He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. He told them that his soul was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.  He told them to stay there and keep watch with Him. (Vs. 37-38)

Then Jesus walked away to pray. When he returned, he found the disciples sleeping.  Upset, he asked if they could not watch with Him for one hour.  He says you must watch and pray so temptation doesn’t take over. He went away the second time and again returned to find the disciples asleep as their eyes were heavy.  He went away one more time. Upon returning he asked the disciples if they were still sleeping and resting.         (Vs, 39-45)

Jesus was still talking to His disciples explaining what is about to happen. While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve arrived. He was accompanied by a large crowd with weapons. They had been sent by the Chief Priests and the Elders of the people.    (Vs. 46-47)

Judas had come to betrayed Jesus for the temptation of money. Judas had already prearranged with the guards that the person he kissed is the person to be arrested.  As he approached Jesus with greetings, Jesus responded, “Do what you have come to do”. Notice how he still calls the betrayer “Friend”. (Vs. 48-50)

Per the arrangements, the men come forward to arrest Jesus.   It was at this point that one of Jesus’ companions drew his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest. It was at that point Jesus instructed there be no more violence and to put away their weapons. (Vs. 51-52)

Jesus then looked to the crowds and stated, “Do you not think that I can call on my Father and he will protect me? But how would the scriptures be fulfilled that way that it says its to happen?” He continued by asking the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion?  Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching but you fail to arrest me?”  (Vs. 53-55)

Jesus sums this up with “All of this has to take place in order for the scriptures to be fulfilled”. At this point all the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away. (Vs. 56)

Questions to be answered:
