Joshua at Jericho

We are one third of the way through the Intro to the Bible. At this point we have seen some amazing things and should have learned a few things but as we progress you are going to be continually amazed and still learning,Remember what God said when the Israelites refused to go into the Promise Land. He said that none of the men age 20 of age or over would enter the Promise land because of their disobedience. It was 40 years after they had left Egypt before all the older men died.  The only exception to this was Joshua and Caleb, who had believed God.

Today’s bible study comes from the book of Numbers. Joshua 6.

As God’s people came into view of Jericho, they found the gates to the city were securely barred because of the Israelites. Nobody entered, and nobody left. (Joshua 6:1)

The Lord gave detailed instructions to Joshua. Joshua told the army to march around the city once with all the armed men. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark.  Joshua told the people the Lord told him that they had to do this for six days. (Joshua 6: 2-5)

On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. When they shouted, the walls around the city came down. They took over the city and devoted it to the Lord.  Then they killed every living thing. (Joshua 6:15-21)

While all this was happening, Joshua instructed the people to spare Rehab. Although she was a prostitute, she was spared along with all that resided with her because she hid the spies we sent. She continued to live among the Israelites. (Joshua 6:17)

Joshua’s armies proceeded to burn the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house

At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: “Cursed before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”  So, the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land. (Joshua 6:26-27)

Questions to be answered:

  1. What did we learn about God in this story?
  2. What do we learn about man/ourselves in this story?
  3. What did you learn new in this story?
  4. What should I do differently because of this story?
