We have learned so far in our bible study how God created the heavens, the earth and all within. We saw God created man and woman. We were instructed on how sin was created as well as the first marriage. Then we were able to travel to Noah and his ark. This was God’s way of getting rid of the sinful nature and to start over. Last week we learned of the Tower of babel where humans were trying to build their way into heaven instead of God’s way. We also learned about Abram who later was renamed Abraham.Twenty-five years have passed from the time God gave His promise till Isaac was born to parents too old to have a child. One day when Isaac was a boy, God tested Abraham’s faith. Our bible passage for this week is Genesis 22:1-19.
God came to Abraham with a specific task in mind. God wanted Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering on a mountain that God would show him in the region of Moriah.
Abraham who was a believer answered the Lord when He called with “Here I am”. However, we can only assume that he agreed to do what the Lord requested because although the scriptures don’t say that, it does tell us that he did do it.
It was early the next morning when Abraham and Isaac were ready to start their journey. Abraham took two of his servants with him and enough wood for the burnt offering.
As the days went by, Isaac started to get curious. So, Isaac asked of his father where the lamb was for the burn offering as they had the fire and the wood. Abraham responded that God will provide the lamb for the burn offering my son.
Abraham was willing to go through with the sacrifice of his son till an angel appeared and stopped him. It would be fair to say that Abraham passed the test with flying colors.
Isaac was spared by an angel sent by God at the very last second. A ram that was caught by his horns in a thicket was the replacement for the sacrifice.
“That place the Lord will provide” was what Abraham called the place where he almost sacrificed his son, but a ram was the last-minute substitute. To this day it is said “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided”.
The following is what the Lord says to Abraham through an angel,
“I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me”.
